ABSTRACT

Introduction: The conditions of teachers' work during the COVID-19 pandemic affected teachers' lives regarding voice disorder and stress, even in emergency remote classroom situation. Objective: To analyze the relationship between the presence of voice disorder, job stress, and COVID-19 in teachers when in emergency remote classroom teaching situation at the time of the pandemic. Method: This is a primary, exploratory, observational cross-sectional study with the use of survey forwarded online during the period of emergency classes after the arrival of COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. The teachers answered the sociodemographic questions about the presence of COVID-19 and the following instruments: Condition of Vocal Production-Teacher [Condição de Produção Vocal - Professor (CPV-P)], Screening Index for Voice Disorder (SIVD), and Job Stress Scale (JSS). Results: Of the 118 teachers analyzed, 94.1% were female; the average age was 44 years. The SIVD recorded the presence of voice disorder in 66.9% of the participants. Regarding the JSS, which are the findings related to stress at work in the demand domain, the teachers showed high levels, a fact which presupposes the existence of pressure of psychological nature to perform their work. Conclusion: The teachers self-reported the presence of voice disorder even in remote class situation, on the occasion of COVID-19, which were more common in older teachers. When comparing the presence of voice disorders, coronavirus symptoms, and stress domains in relation to demand, control, and social support, there was no significance. It is hoped that this study will help to reflect on the need to improve teachers' working conditions, strengthening work-related voice disorder actions and guiding actions for vocal care and well-being.

ABSTRACT

Resultados: participaram 3.343 trabalhadores, 77,9% do sexo feminino.

Abstract Objective: analyze the isolated and combined effects of gender, race, and occupational stressors on the mental health of healthcare workers. Methods: cross-sectional study with a random sample of health workers in Bahia, Brazil. The primary exposure variables were gender, race, and occupational stressors, assessed using the Effort-Reward Imbalance (ERI) scale. The Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) measured common mental disorders (CMD), the outcome variable. The interaction measures were verified based on the additivity criterion by calculating the excess prevalence, excess prevalence ratio, and relative difference. Results: 3,343 workers participated, 77.9% were female. CMD prevalence was 21.7% higher among women, Black people, and those exposed to work stressors. Among Black women in a situation of ERI, the prevalence of CMD was three times higher compared with white men in a situation of balance (reference group). Discussion: black women workers accumulate social disadvantages and are more susceptible to occupations that require more significant effort and less reward. CMD prevalence was higher at the intersection of exposures. Combined effect of the factors exceeded the sum of the isolated effects, demonstrating an interaction between gender, race, and occupational stressors.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This cross-sectional study examined factors associated with occupational stress among 384 dentists working in the private sector in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. Data were collected from August to October 2020 through an online form. Two outcomes - (1) anxiety and worry and (2) preparation and safety for work during the pandemic - constituted a proxy for occupational stress. The independent variables were grouped according to the explanatory theoretical model into individual, organisational and extra-organisational factors. Associations were tested by bivariate and multivariate logistic regression. Although prepared and confident, dentists felt anxious and worried about providing clinical care. Women, younger respondents and those who received no guidance on safety measures were more likely to report insecurity and unpreparedness. Younger professionals, those who did not participate in decision-making and who only sometimes had an assistant for four-hand work, were more likely to feel anxious and worried. In addition to individual factors, work organisation factors were associated with occupational stress among dentists in the first year of the pandemic.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to understand the occupational stressors perceived by military nurses and their ways of coping. A qualitative research was carried out at a Brazilian Army hospital. Data collection took place from August to October 2019 through an interview by using an electronic recorder. The data were analyzed in a descriptive way, and the hermeneutic-dialectical method was used as a reference based on Betty Neuman's systems theory. Based on the units of signification of the participants' discourses, three categories of analysis were identified: (1)Perceived occupational stressors; (2) Perception of nurses about the repercussions of their work environment in everyday life; and (3) Coping with occupational stressors. The military nurses' perception of occupational stress showed that this scenario consists of stressors typical of the profession, of what it is like to be a nurse and to be in the military. There may be several responses to coping with perceived stress.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT This article aims to systematize, from scientific evidence, the conditioning and determining aspects for psychological distress of health professionals in the hospital, in view of the reorganization of the work process during the pandemic of COVID-19. This is an integrative literature synthesis review, of a qualitative nature, by searching scientific articles in the scientific databases Epistemonikos, ScienceDirect, PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science. The final corpus for analysis consisted of 31 studies. For the results, the multiple variables of higher risk, protective factors, conditioning, and determinants for psychological repercussions in hospital health professionals in the course of the COVID-19 pandemic were considered. On the other hand, the level of exposure, long working hours, fear of getting infected and infecting their families, of working in the front line of COVID-19, lack of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and stigma were the determining and conditioning factors for the psychological suffering of health professionals, directly related to, occupational burnout, burnout, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, insomnia, and depression. The systematization can cause reflections about the need for updating policy responses, through guidelines and competencies, to establish a process of continuous monitoring of the mental health of health professionals.

ABSTRACT

Introduction. Workplace bullying and sexual harassment are concerns among general surgery residents in Colombia. Objective. To explore the prevalence and impact of workplace bullying and sexual harassment incidents among general surgery residents in Colombia. Materials and methods. This nationwide study was conducted in 2020. Residents selfrated their exposure to workplace bullying and to sexual harassment in the forms of gender harassment, unwanted sexual attention, and sexual coercion. We analyzed demographic variables, perpetrator's characteristics, and differences between victims and non-victims. Results. The study included 302 residents. It found that 49% of general surgery residents in Colombia suffered from workplace bullying and 14.9% experienced sexual harassment. The main forms of sexual harassment were gender harassment (47%) and unwanted sexual attention (47%). Women reported significantly higher rates of being sexually harassed. Surgeons were the main perpetrators of sexual harassment. Conclusions. Workplace bullying and sexual harassment are frequent events in general surgery residency in Colombia. These findings suggest the need for interventions to improve the educational culture of surgical departments and decrease the prevalence of these behaviors.

ABSTRACT

Utilizou-se sete bases eletrônicas de dados e os descritores, em inglês: ["Work" OR "Workplace"] AND ["Occupational Stress" OR "Workplace Violence" OR "Harassment, Non-Sexual" OR "Sexual Harassment"] AND ["Suicide" OR "Suicide, Attempted"].

ABSTRACT Suicide is underestimated and stigmatized in society and work-related suicide is even more invisible. This study aimed to analyze the scientific literature on the risk of suicide or attempted suicide among workers and its relationship with psychosocial factors, harassment and harassment in the workplace. An integrative literature review was carried out in seven databases, using the following descriptors: ["Work" OR "Workplace"] AND ["Occupational Stress" OR "Workplace Violence" OR "Harassment, Non-Sexual" OR "Sexual Harassment"] AND ["Suicide" OR "Suicide, Attempted"]. Studies focused on "suicidal ideation" and specifically related to certain occupations were excluded. According to PRISMA guidelines, 1427 references were identified and 15 articles were selected. There was a significant association between the risk of suicide and/or suicide attempt with harassment at work, high psychological and cognitive demands, low control/autonomy, fear of losing the job/be downgraded, work-family conflicts, poor social support, and job dissatisfaction. Severe work-related stress was also associated with the risk of suicide, when combined with severe domestic stress. This study showed that fear of losing a job, harassment and psychosocial factors at work increase the risk of suicide and attempted suicide. Such conditions should be focus of the attention on workers'care.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: According to the World Health Organization, Burnout syndrome is a response to the chronification of stress, strict to the work context. Some studies recognized this condition in 1980 and highlighted emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment experienced by professionals. There is a need to understand the Burnout syndrome in physical therapists, and the aggravation of the COVID-19 pandemic in these professionals working in the teaching, clinical and hospital áreas. OBJECTIVE: To verify the frequency of Burnout syndrome in physical therapists and to associate the impact of the work environment and the work variables in each area of work in the period of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODOLOGY: This is an observational, descriptiveanalytical study with a quantitative approach and cross-sectional design. A questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic, occupational and behavioral data, as well as the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) in its Human Services Survey (HSS) version. The inclusion criteria were age (22 to 70 years old), both genders, duly qualified by the professional council, and working in at least one fixed place of attendance for a minimum period of 06 months. Data analysis was done using the T test, Anova, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney. The significance level was set at p<0.05 and 95% CIs. RESULTS: 57 physiotherapist professionals working in clinics, hospitals and teaching participated. We compared the 03 criteria of the BS and its total score and correlated the 03 scenarios, in this regard, the three groups had Burnout Syndrome, since the literature recommends that high emotional exhaustion, associated with high depersonalization and low personal fulfillment is considered a syndrome of Burnout. CONCLUSION: Physical therapists have a high level of incidence of BS, it was found that the pandemic aggravated the prevalence and impact of BS on professionals working in hospitals, clinics and teaching.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To establish the relationship between occupational stress levels and the production of malondialdehyde (MDA), as a product of lipid peroxidation, among workers of Universidad Católica Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo in Chiclayo. Materials and methods: A descriptive, correlational research. The sample consisted of 72 workers, 37 of whom were professors and 35 administrative staff members. Plasma MDA was measured spectrophotometrically by thiobarbituric acid (TBA) reaction. To determine stress, the Occupational Stress Scale, developed by Ivancevich and Matteson in 1989 and adapted by Suárez in 2013, was used. The instrument had 25 items and seven dimensions: organizational climate, organizational structure, organizational territory, technology, leadership influence, lack of cohesion and group support. Results: Twenty-three men and 49 women participated in the research. The mean age was 45.1 years and the standard deviation was 11.33, with a minimum of 25 and a maximum of 68 years. The highest percentage of high occupational stress was observed in the dimensions leadership influence (19.40 %), organizational structure (16.70 %) and organizational territory (16.70 %). A total of 39 workers (54 %), 17 of whom were men and 22 were women, had high levels of MDA-i.e., plasma values higher than 3.94 µM. Spearman's Rho at 95 % confidence interval showed that the correlation between MDA values and sex, working in another workplace and childcare at home were p = 0.08, p = 0.61 and p = 0.33, respectively; therefore, there was no statistical significance. Conclusions: Out of all workers, 54 % had high plasma levels of MDA. Although no statistically significant correlation was found, the dimensions leadership influence, organizational structure and organizational territory showed high stress levels on the order of 19.40 %, 16.70 % and 16.70 %, respectively.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To understand the current situation of long working hours exposure of couriers in Zhejiang Province, and to analyze the influence of long working hours exposure levels on their occupational stress and depression symptoms, and provide a basis for promoting the physical and mental health of couriers. Methods: From September to December 2021 , 1159 couriers from Zhejiang Express Transport Companies were selected as respondents by cluster sampling, and their basic information were collected. The occupational stress and depression symptoms of the couriers were assessed using the Core Occupational Stress Scale (COSS) and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). The effects of long work hours (>48 h per week) on the occupational stress and depression symptoms of the couriers were analyzed. Results: The average age of 1159 courier in Zhejiang Province was (33.24±8.42) years, the average weekly working hours were (63.21±18.77) h, and 75.15% (871/1159) were long-term workers. The detection rates of occupational stress and depression symptoms in courier were 32.44% (376/1159) and 32.53% (377/1159), respectively. There were significant differences in the detection rates of occupational stress and depression symptoms among couriers with different ages, educational background, marital status, monthly average income, length of service, position or post, shift status, drinking status, and average weekly working hours (P <0.05). The adjusted logistic regression analysis showed that, after adjusting for the influence of confounding factors such as age, educational background, marital status, monthly average income, length of service, position or post, shift status and drinking status, compared with the weekly working hours ≤48 h, weekly working hours of 63-77 h, 78-92 h, ≥93 h were the risk factors for occupational stress (OR=1.547, 95%CI: 1.019-2.350; OR=1.886, 95%CI: 1.184-3.006; OR=2.338, 95%CI: 1.188-4.062) and depression symptoms (OR=1.897, 95%CI: 1.258-2.860; OR=2.041, 95%CI: 1.290-3.230; OR=4.978, 95%CI: 2.551-9.715) of couriers (P<0.05) . Conclusion: Long working hours could increase the risk of occupational stress and depression symptoms among couriers. It is necessary to arrange working hours reasonably to reduce the occurrence of occupational stress and depression symptoms of couriers.

ABSTRACT

Background Since the outbreak of COVID-19, primary health care workers have been facing unprecedented work pressure, and their occupational stress should be taken seriously. Objective To analyze the occupational stress situation and its influencing factors of primary health care workers in Guangdong Province, and to propose targeted interventions. Methods Using a multi-stage stratified random sampling method, each prefecture-level city in Guangdong Province was classified into "good", "medium", or "poor" category based on its gross domestic product (GDP) in 2019 released by the Guangdong Provincial Bureau of Statistics. In September 2021, four primary health care institutions were randomly selected from each stratum, and a total of 1327 staff members were selected for the study. The Core Occupational Stress Scale (COSS) and a basic information questionnaire designed by the authors were used. Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the means between two groups, and Kruskal-Walis H test was used to compare the means among multiple groups. The comparison of categorical data was performed by trend χ2 test or Pearson χ2 test; the analysis of factors influencing occupational stress was performed by dichotomous multiple logistic regression analysis. Results There were 365 health care workers reporting occupational stress in this survey, and the positive rate of occupational stress was 27.5%. The total occupational stress score in M (P25, P75) and the scores of social support, organization and reward, demand and effort, and control were 45.0 (40.0, 50.0), 20.0 (17.0, 21.0), 14.0 (12.0, 17.0), 12.0 (10.0, 15.0), and 5.0 (4.0, 6.0), respectively. The results of dichotomous multiple logistic regression analysis showed that high education, low income, doctor positions, long working hours in a day, and shift work were associated with the occurrence of reporting occupational stress (P<0.05). Conclusion Education, average monthly income, job category, daily working hours, and shifts are factors influencing the occurrence of reporting occupational stress in primary health care workers; targeted interventions should be implemented to reduce their occupational stress levels.
